Tony Ling is a surgical chiropodist, who is based in Dorchester, Dorset. His qualifications include MBCHA, MSSCH, RGN, RMN, DPSN. He is a member of the British Chiropody Association.

How to contact Tony:
Tony works at the Chiropody Centre in Princes Street, Dorchester, Tuesdays to Saturdays. On Thursday he has a late surgery. Telephone: 01305 259909.

The Chiropody Surgery caters for a range of foot conditions including flat feet, foot pain, corns, verrucas, bunions, in growing toenails and hard skin.

General:
Instruments used in the surgery are cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner, then sterilised in an auto-clave. Other items are disinfected between patients. A new pair of surgical gloves is used for each patient and a new, sterile, disposable scalpel blade is used for each patient.

Corns:
Corns are surgically removed using a sterile, disposable scalpel blade. This is generally a painless procedure.

Hard Skin:
This may be treated using a foot file, scalpel or wax footbath.

In growing toenails:
A spur of nail protruding into the skin bordering the nail edge causes this problem. A form of electronic anaesthesia is used to numb pain and a section of nail is removed. A dressing is applied and the site checked after three days when the nail edge is smoothed and sometimes packed. Two further follow up appointments are necessary to ensure the nail is growing correctly.

Thickened Nails:
The thickness is reduced using a nail drill. This is a painless procedure.

Fungal Infection of the Nail:
Reducing the nail thickness as above and trimming back as much of the affected nail as possible, followed by the application of drops twice daily (by the patient) is the treatment used.

Verruca:
Caused by a viral infection, there are a variety of treatments including the application of chemicals or use of cryosurgery (a freezing technique). The appropriate method for each individual is discussed prior to starting treatment.

Flat Feet:
The causes of this condition are explained, exercises and correct walking are tauhgt. Use of orthotics (shoe inserts) is discussed and are available if they are indicated. Associated problems such as plantar fasciitis are treated.

Wax Skin Treatment:
This is offered for arthritic pain in knees, feet and hands as well as treatment for hard skin, or simply to pamper yourself. Paraffin wax with essential oils of Lavender, Ylang Ylang and others are used.
